České noviny Last year, the number of deaths in the Czech Republic exceeded the number of births by 20,000<

Prague - In the Czech Republic last year, which was marked by the coronavirus epidemic, approximately 20,000 more people died than were born. It is the highest number of deaths over the number of births since 2000. The Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ) presented the preliminary results today at an online presentation. The population of the Czech Republic increased by 7838 to 10.702 million last year. The increase was significantly lower than in previous years and was ensured only by foreign migration. Year-on-year, births, marriages and divorces decreased last year.

129,289 people died in the Czech Republic last year, which is the most since 1987. Compared to 2019, the number increased by 15 percent, the most among people over 75. Mortality in men increased from middle age, the highest between the ages of 75 and 89. In women, it increased especially after the age of eighty.

Life in the Czech Republic got shorter last year. Men have a year less chance to live and women 0.7 years less. In 2019, according to CZSO data, men expected to live to 76.3 years and women 82.1 years. In previous years, life expectancy was extended every year. Due to the epidemic last year, the Czech Republic went back roughly seven years to 2013, according to data from the CZSO. In 2019, 65-year-old Czechs had 16.29 years and Czech women 19.94 years ahead of them, according to the data. Last year, life expectancy was shortened by 1.1 years for men aged 65 and by 0.8 years for women aged 65 and over. According to Terezia Štyglerová, head of the demographic statistics department of the CZSO, the shortening is even greater at older ages.

Compared to 2019, 16,900 more people died last year, most of them in the last quarter. At that time, the Czech Republic was going through the autumn wave of the epidemic. Statistics record a total of 129,300 deaths last year. The most of them was in November, namely 15,800. In October and December, the number reached 14,200. The number of deaths increased in all age categories above 30 years. 3,600 more people died between the ages of 80 and 84, and 3,400 more between the ages of 75 and 79.

Deaths increased in all regions. In the Zlín region, the number increased year-on-year by 24 percent, in Karlovy Vary and Olomouc by 18 percent. It rose most mildly in the Pilsen Region and Prague, by 11 and 12 percent, respectively. According to Michaela Němečková from the Department of Demographic Statistics, regional differences are due to the age composition of the population, the availability of health care and the number of infected people. "Mortality ratios are diverse. The Zlín Region, where the increase is the highest, is one of the oldest regions," said Němečková.

110,200 children were born in the Czech Republic last year, i.e. 2,000 fewer than in the previous year. It was the third annual decline in a row. Approximately 20,000 fewer children were born than the number of people who died. According to statisticians, last year's decrease since 1947 after the post-war stabilization of the number of inhabitants is extraordinary, not only in its amount, but also in its cause. "Last year's decrease is similar to that in the second half of the 90s of the last century, but then the reason was that few children were born. Last year there was a high number of deaths," pointed out Štyglerová.

The average number of children per woman has not changed. It remained at 1.71. The weaker generation from the 1990s is reaching the age of their parents, so the number of births is lower.

According to statistics, the aging of Czech society continued last year. The number of seniors over 65 has increased. Their share exceeded the twenty percent mark. There were 2.16 million of them. On the contrary, persons of active age decreased to 6.82 million.

Last year, after six years of annual growth, the number of marriages in the Czech Republic fell by 9,455 to 45,400. The fewest weddings were in March, under 700. According to Štyglerová, this is the fewest in post-war history. Statisticians point out that in the spring ceremonies could not take place due to the nationwide lockdown, and in the fall they were limited.

Year-on-year, there was a decrease of 2,400 divorces, i.e. by a tenth. The authorities ended 21,700 marriages last year. Statisticians recorded the largest year-on-year decrease in the number in March to May, and less significantly in November. Conversely, the highest increase was in June. Almost 41 percent of marriages ended in divorce last year, compared to 45 percent in the two previous years.

The number of inhabitants rose in five out of 14 regions last year. As in previous years, the increase was greatest in the Central Bohemian Region and Prague. The South Moravian Region became the third most populous region of the republic. He thus pushed the Moravian-Silesian Region.

55,661 foreigners immigrated to the country, while 28,734 people went abroad from the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic thus gained 26,927 inhabitants. In a year-on-year comparison, it was almost 40 percent less. People from Ukraine took care of the increase the most, 16,000 of them added. The decrease was greatest among foreigners from the EU. According to statistics, this was partly related to the change in the law on the residence of foreigners.
