Vaccination of young children starts in the Czech Republic, but American parents are afraid. What do psychologists advise?<

The global crisis, limited contact with family and friends and a constant stay at home have caused a rapid deterioration of mental health in a huge part of society in less than two years. Adolescents, who need daily interactions with the world and their peers even more than adults, are facing the worst pandemic. American psychologists therefore came up with instructions on how to help their descendants as much as possible.

"It's important for parents to realize how unique the stressor is," America's leading psychologist Mitch Prinstein told Good Morning. "She is global. We see no end to him. It has potentially dire consequences and has completely changed the roles of children, their routines and their involvement in society, "he added.

"Such a combination of factors is basically the worst possible combination when it comes to mental health," the expert added. But according to Prinstein, something good could come out of the crisis. "The pandemic has taught us to take care of our mental health and to talk openly about it. We need to think of it as an opportunity to build prevention in schools, families, communities and help children acquire psychological skills that will make them resilient, ”he said.

In addition to the pediatrician, a visit to a child psychologist

According to clinical psychologist Erlanger Turner, it is essential to look at mental health as well as physical health. As part of prevention, it therefore recommends that not only a pediatrician but also a child psychologist visit you. "Even if you don't know if your child is really going through anything, it's a good idea to check," Turner advises.

"You may not have a long-term relationship with a therapist, but maybe one visit can reassure you that everything is fine, or point out more serious things to focus on," the expert added.

Sleep during the day and impaired concentration

New York psychologist Darien Sutton warns of sudden behavioral changes. He mentioned, for example, longer or more frequent sleeping during the day, worsened concentration, frustration and less interest in hobbies or other previously popular activities. He also advises parents to trust their own intuition. "It simply came to our notice then. We should use that time for good conversation. "

According to Prinstein, it is absolutely essential to talk to your children about mental health often. "A great way to start is to ask your child what he would do if his friend had some problems," he told reporters. "When a child sees that their parents can lead such a conversation empathetically and not panicked, they are much more likely to go after them with their own feelings," he says.

Turner pointed out that children learn from their parents. Even parents have to take care of their own mental health. "We all faced some emotional challenges during the pandemic. So when we share our own experiences and the problems we have gone through with children, they realize that no one is always perfect. Not even Mom and Dad, "he said.

Parents say: We still don't know enough about vaccinations

Parents of children between the ages of five and 11 still do not have much to vaccinate in the United States. Only 29 percent of this age group received at least one dose, according to a comprehensive survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Another third choose the "wait and see" tactic.

Six out of ten parents say we do not yet have enough information about vaccines, whether in terms of effectiveness, side effects or safety. Although the vast majority of carers said they agreed with the oft-quoted statement, "the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks," one in six parents considered further research and clinical trials to be absolutely essential. According to 44 percent of respondents, the vaccine is safe for adolescents and children.

The results of the survey did not surprise the vice-president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. According to Sean O'Leary, it is common for parents to be more cautious about their children and not about themselves. "When you ask your parents about their concerns, safety almost always comes first. And they often say they don't have enough information, "said a doctor on CNN's website.

According to O'Leary, the fear of parents is behind the declining interest in the vaccine, which the United States has been facing for several weeks. The organization's survey confirmed that fears of a lack of information as a reason not to vaccinate children are highly prevalent. But he also mentioned several others. For example, one in six parents does not say they have the opportunity to get their child to a vaccination center due to long distance or lack of money. Some Hispanics and blacks interviewed added that they were not close to a center they would trust and feel safe.

Pediatricians, family doctors and schools are trying to convince hesitant parents about the safety of vaccines. In addition, support from schools, according to recent findings, makes a significant contribution to overall vaccination coverage. In institutions that have no incentive to get vaccinated, only 8 percent of five- to 11-year-olds have received at least one dose. Active schools report 28 percent.

Prevention against postcovide syndrome

In the Czech Republic, parents will be able to report their children for vaccination from midnight on Sunday to Monday. Registration will take place through the central reservation system.

Although children do not belong to the risk group and face minimal risk of serious health complications, they can easily transmit the virus. In addition, the vaccine could prevent them from potentially developing PIMS (multisystem inflammatory response) and protect overweight or chronic children.

"The severe course of covid-19 associated with lung disease and severe pneumonia affects only a small group of children, in most cases those who have other serious associated diseases," Jan David, a doctor at the Pediatric Clinic of the Motol University Hospital, told Radiožurnál.

According to the plan of the Ministry of Health, pediatricians are to be primarily involved in the vaccination of children.
