3rd week of pregnancy: Fetal development and pregnancy changes<

The miracle of conception

Ovulation occurs roughly halfway through the menstrual cycle. The egg, hidden in a sac (follicle) filled with fluid, matures, the follicle bursts and the egg is released. The ruptured follicle produces a corpus luteum, which releases progesterone. This hormone prepares the lining of the uterus to receive the egg. The egg is captured by the fallopian tube and is moved towards the uterus. The fusion of the egg and the sperm occurs in the wider part of the fallopian tube. A single cell is formed, the zygote, which carries 46 chromosomes of genetic information, an equal share from each of the parents. Within twenty hours, the cell divides into two and division, or furrowing, continues. After fertilization, the egg takes about seven days to reach the uterus.

Fluid accumulates under the outer layer of cells and a blastocyst is formed. It passes into the uterus, where it tries to nestle in the lining of the uterine cavity. The so-called germinal target, the basis of the future embryo, is formed from the inner layer of blastocyst cells. At this time, hundreds of cells form the blastocyst. Solid nesting takes about 13 days. The first organs and organ systems begin to form in the embryo. The first of these is the nervous system, followed by the heart. A fairly large proportion of blastocysts, about 40%, that reach the uterus never implant. They die and are washed away by the next menstruation.
