The skeletal remains of a Celtic woman were excavated in the spring of 2017 during the construction of a primary school in Aussersihl, one of the city districts of Zurich. The woman, about forty years old, was lying in a primitive "coffin" hollowed out in the trunk of a tree, the bark of which was still visible, and she was wearing a fine woolen dress, a sheepskin coat, and a beautiful necklace.

Although the woman's identity remains unknown, archaeologists have pieced together several pieces of information about her life. "During her life, the woman probably did little physical work and at the same time ate a lot of sugary food or food rich in starches," Swiss authorities reported.

Based on the results of the isotopic analysis of her skeletal remains, scientists are convinced that the woman lived her entire life in the vicinity of Zurich, most likely in the valley of the Limmat river.

According to the Swiss authorities, the find of a necklace, which they describe as "unique", is particularly significant. The way the jewelry is made is especially unusual - it ends with a pair of brooches and is decorated with rare decorative glass and amber beads. But there are also other pieces of jewelry in the woman's burial equipment, such as bronze bracelets and a belt with various pendants.

Although the woman was only discovered in March 2017, her final resting place is well known to archaeologists from before. It lies only about 80 meters away from the grave of a Celtic warrior, which was excavated as early as 1903 during the construction of a new gymnasium.

The unknown man was buried together with his sword, spear, shield and in full armor, which led experts to conclude that he belonged to the upper echelons of society at the time. Since the two dead were buried close to each other and at about the same time, archaeologists believe it is likely that they knew each other.
