Humidifiers - helpers not only for allergy sufferers

The device, which switches on, switches off and regulates the air humidity as required, is a real helper in the household.

What we need to know before buying

Humidifiers differ significantly from each other - technology, equipment, appearance and price. The choice is varied, so it is important to realize how often we want to use the device, what we actually expect from it, how much we are willing to invest. The difference is whether we run it exceptionally or it is our year-round companion.

If we have a permanent problem with dry air in the interior, it pays to choose a sophisticated design that does not burden the staff.

We prefer remote control, the possibility of setting the operating time, the ability to regulate humidity and, as a bonus, an ionizer.

We monitor the noise of all devices, because they are mostly in the bedroom, children's room or study. Performance, tank size and length of operation without the need to change water are also important.

The humidifier works well only in a closed room, we do not put it near windows or doors. It belongs on the floor, never on the furniture.

Types of humidifiers

Hot steam: the device humidifies the air with sterile water vapor, which is created by evaporation in a thin layer on the heating element, the so-called film boiling. High temperature eliminates bacteria, operation is more hygienic.

Ultrasonic humidification: creates small droplets from the water, which the fan blows into the air, where their evaporation increases the humidity. Visible and even fog comes out of the device.

Cold steam: the air stream passes through multi-layer inserts with antibacterial treatment, from which water evaporates. Dirt is trapped in the inserts.

When it needs to be dehumidified

We may have the opposite problem, too much humidity. Especially in older homes, it can bother us because it degrades food and clothing.

A quick and inexpensive solution is absorption bags of various scents, which can be placed in cabinets or drawers. The fabric on the surface of the bags allows moisture only inwards and prevents it from escaping back. The bag lasts about 4 to 6 weeks.

Other options are special moisture and odor absorbers that work on a 2-in-1 tablet system. They do not need electricity for their operation, it is enough to change the absorption tablet regularly.

The absorber is suitable for small and medium-sized spaces, we will appreciate it in the pantry, food cabinet, in the basement or in the cloakroom.
