There is less money for community service this year. For some, however, they remain the last chance<

The number of people who clean the streets as part of community service is decreasing in the Czech Republic. This year, the state will send 1.3 billion crowns to cities for their salaries, i.e. 600 million crowns less than last year. The reason is low unemployment and enough vacancies in companies. However, representatives of the town halls claim that they only gave jobs to people who have a slim chance of finding any other and will now be missing from the streets.

Events: Community service

Stanislav Šebek was accepted for community service in Děčín. Like a newbie, he puffed on new overalls and shoes. From February, he will start cleaning the streets together with others. He used to work as a laborer in metalworks, but now he couldn't find another job. "I've tried it, but they look weird – considering the health issues and the fact that I'm already fifty."

In Děčín, they have ready work clothes for about seventy people, the number they usually received at this time. Now there will be forty of them. "They only have a contract for three months, then we'll see if we get more funds," said Jaroslav Horák, head of the Municipal Services Center in Děčín.

A few kilometers away, seven people are cleaning Benešov nad Ploučnicí. There used to be ten more here in the past. "They are missing an awful lot. The city is big and there is a lot of work," said Pavel Košnar, Director of Benešov nad Ploučnicí City Services.

The workers themselves often perceive community service as a last chance. "I'm on a disability pension, so they won't take me anywhere," said Hanka Kratochvílová, who works in Benešov nad Ploučnicí. "They ask: You are forty-five and you are still looking for a job at all?" remarked Vendulka Schaferová, who works in Děčín.

Unemployment is now at a record low in the Czech Republic, and state support for community service has fallen with it. "Even people from this group of job seekers have a much higher chance of getting a permanent job," said Kateřina Beránková, press secretary of the Labor Office of the Czech Republic.

Hope for the cities are European projects and also promises by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs that they will try to negotiate an increase in money during the year.

In addition, local town halls use community service to maintain order in excluded locations. The streets here are cleaned by the locals. "When you clean in the place where you also live, you have a completely different relationship with it, that's clear," says Děčín councilor for social issues Ondřej Smíšek (Náš Děčín).
