Potato salad, feeding animals, ox lead. Children from children's homes also celebrate the holidays in South Moravia. But they are not always happy and cheerful.

There won't be twenty neatly wrapped presents waiting for her under the tree. There probably won't even be five of them, and he won't even find a new iPhone or computer in them. Yet her voice shakes with excitement and her eyes sparkle when she says the word Christmas. "I'm really looking forward to Christmas. Mainly for gifts and for the whole family to gather for dinner. Aunt Iveta and Aunt Ivana will be here. That it will just be good," smiles eleven-year-old Róza from the Dagmar Children's Home in Brno. Her wish is simple: nice new pants.

Róza, like dozens of other children in southern Moravia, will spend the holidays with a family group in a children's home. They bake cookies, stuff themselves with salad, watch fairy tales, get presents. Some even more than once, because they spend Christmas Eve both at home and with relatives, where they go. "We have seventeen children staying here for Christmas. We go for walks, feed the animals. We are preparing a classic Christmas Day for them with gifts, salad, folk customs and everything that goes with it. They will receive the other gifts when they return. There is a risk that they would otherwise lose them," said Etela Coufalová, director of the Nová Ves u Chotěboř Children's Home.

She alluded to the fact that many children leave the children's home over Christmas and go to visit their relatives. Some only for holidays. Others for the whole holiday season. However, if they received the gifts before they left, they could return without them. It often happens that their parents confiscate them and give them, for example, to a pawn shop. "Yes. We used to give gifts to the children in advance. Now we do it later due to security," added Coufalová.

At the same time, according to experts, Christmas is pivotal for raising children. They learn what is important in life, what values lie in, and as soon as they grow up, they pass these experiences on. "It is also a fundamental thing in terms of self-confidence and self-esteem. To feel that I matter and that I am not missing out. That there are people who think about them. Then of course there is the social aspect. After the holidays, children mainly talk about what they got. Those who have nothing to talk about are pushed away," explained psychologist Zuzana Spurná.

The construction of the Čebín bypass is one step closer, it will be built by the winner of the competition

The homes are aware of this, which is why they try to ensure that the children who stay in the facility do not miss anything for Christmas. "We celebrate Christmas today. We have three family groups. In the afternoon we prepare festive boards, sing carols, watch fairy tales. Around five o'clock, the families get together and have a dinner consisting of fish soup, potato salad and fish or chicken steak. Then it's time for the gifts," said the director of the Dagmar Children's Home, Daniel Kusý, adding that he tries to make the holidays as similar as possible to those in ordinary families.

However, instead of comfort, even these children are burdened by the gravity of the situation. But only temporarily. "We notice that they show some nervousness because they have to stay here and have nowhere to go. But once the other children leave to visit relatives, the nervousness dissipates and they try to follow the traditions. Children don't eat meat during the day to see the golden pig, they bake a Christmas tree the day before, play fairy tales, sing carols or go for a walk. At four o'clock there is a festive dinner, when the children prepare a festive blackboard. As they are milking, the bell rings, Santa comes and the children go to the tree. In short, they are enjoying Christmas comfort," outlined the director of the Hodonín Children's Home Vlastimil Kluďák.
