Do children wear sunglasses? - Babyweb.cz<

The UV rays emitted by the sun are dangerous for the eyes - especially near the sea or in the mountains. And children's eyes are more sensitive than adult eyes because they have a wider and more transparent lens in relation to the eye. If the eyes are exposed to too much radiation, skin burns, inflammation of the cornea or conjunctiva may occur. Then the eyes hurt, they water, there is photophobia and the inability to open the eyes. That's why we should protect our eyes and children's eyes.

However, it has its drawbacks. You are right that in our latitudes, sunglasses are not very suitable for small children (under two years) because of the risk of photophobia. Children's vision is still developing at this age. "At this age, it is enough to protect the eyes with a cap or a wider hat. However, it is ideal not to expose the child to the sun's rays. However, if you are going to the sea or high up in the mountains, pack sunglasses even for a small child," says ophthalmologist Gabriela Pilková from the Kukátko Children's Eye Center. Gradually, however, get them used to wearing sunglasses, because older children already have glasses on their eyes, but when they are not used to it, they tear them off.

The solution can be glasses with a strap that makes them difficult to pull off. But if you really have a notorious glasses remover at home and your example doesn't work either, then at least consistently put on a cap or a hat for these children.

For children, choose glasses that fit them well and are practical. "When protecting against UV radiation, it is important that the UV filter in the glasses is 100%, so that the vision is protected against both UV A and UV B radiation. UV 400 is recommended. Glasses must not be too dark. 50-60 percent darkening of glasses is recommended even at the sea," advises the ophthalmologist, adding that you can recognize quality glasses by the fact that the CE certificate and the level of protection (for children, choose 2-3) will be indicated on the inside of the side of the glasses.

However, be careful! If your child is being treated for amblyopia, forget the sunglasses regardless of the weather. For these children, treating the eye defect is more important than wearing sunglasses. Nowadays, even high-quality clear prescription glasses have a UV filter in the lenses, so the parent does not have to worry that the child does not have sufficient protection against UV radiation.
