Vaccination of children between 5 and 12 years of age should start in the week of December 13 – registration was officially launched on Monday, but the system actually started already on Sunday evening. It is similar to the registration of teenagers and adults. The parent registers the child with their mobile phone number and provides their e-mail address, the child's social security number and their health insurance company.

It also includes a short questionnaire regarding the child's state of health, in which the parent ticks whether or not their child has had covid-19, has had any reaction to vaccination in the past, or is taking any medication. At the same time, you need to choose the vaccination site where you want to come with your child - there will be fewer of them than in the case of adults, because there must be a pediatrician on site, among other things. Centers will gradually increase, for example in large hospitals.

Subsequently, an SMS with PIN 2 arrives on the parent's mobile phone, with the help of which he can book a specific date for his child on the website. Each child must have their own registration, all can be done with one parent phone number. PIN 2 may arrive several days after self-registration in the system.

Unlike adults and children from 12 years of age, younger children are vaccinated with a third dose and it is not possible to choose a vaccine, only Comirnaty from the manufacturer Pfizer/BioNTech is used. It is also administered in two doses three weeks apart.

Call a practitioner

In addition to large centers, children's practitioners should also vaccinate, but not all of them will do it, because it is quite complex organizationally - they are afraid, for example, that they would have vaccines left , if they didn't manage to invite enough children at once. This can be verified by calling the child's doctor and possibly ordering it directly there.

How to vaccinate children from 5 to 12 years and what you need to know about it

According to the information so far, the vaccination itself should start on December 15 or 16, by which time the distribution of the vaccine should take place. It is likely that in some regions it will be later, perhaps after the New Year.

Benefits and risks

It is true that the vast majority of children will get through covid-19 without serious problems, often completely without symptoms. But even among them there are cases where they have serious pneumonia, end up in hospitals, and several children in the Czech Republic have already died from the disease. In addition, they are at risk of PIMS syndrome and long-term post-covid problems, for example with fatigue and concentration.

Vaccination should prevent this, although, as with adults, it may not protect against the infection itself.

According to experience from countries where children of this age group are already vaccinated, the side effects after vaccination are the same as for teenagers and adults. These include pain at the injection site, tiredness, headache, redness and swelling at the injection site, muscle pain and chills. They are usually mild or moderate and get better within a few days after vaccination.

Third vaccine dose: when and where to register and who can revaccinate

It is good to know that the vaccine is not experimental, although its critics say so - it has completed all the necessary clinical trials, on the basis of which, for example, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved it for use in children on November 25 2021.

EMA has concluded that the benefits of Comirnaty in children aged 5 to 12 years, especially in those who have co-morbidities and would therefore be at risk of a more severe course of the disease, outweigh its risks. In addition, it turns out that the more people in the population who are vaccinated, the more the spread of the virus and the number of severe cases after infection should slow down.

Vaccination after a previous illness

Many children of this age group have already experienced covid-19, so the question arises as to whether parents can have them vaccinated and at what intervals.

"According to the recommendations of the American CDC, it is possible to vaccinate immediately after the end of isolation. According to the recommendations of the Czech Vaccinology Society, a week after the end of isolation after an asymptomatic course and 14 days after a symptomatic illness," explains pediatric general practitioner Daniel Dražan, a member of the committee of the specialist vaccinology society.

According to him, it does not matter whether or not they had the disease with or without symptoms, and there is no need for them to go for an antibody test.

At the same time, if someone doesn't want to vaccinate their children yet, they don't have to - it's not mandatory, and in addition, like all other age groups, they need a 180-day disease certificate, which has the same weight as a full vaccination.

Children under the age of 12 currently do not have to prove anything practically anywhere when it comes to covid-19. No one wants a certificate for them in restaurants, just like in the cinema, but it is possible that there will also be a tightening in the future. This can be seen, for example, in the rules for ski courses for children over 12 years of age who may have already been vaccinated.
