Poland is shaken by the death of a woman who was expecting twins. They refused to remove the dead fetus from her<

Thirty-seven-year-old Agnieszka T. was in her first trimester of pregnancy when her husband took her to the Blessed Virgin Mary Hospital in Częstochowa on December 21. According to relatives, the woman expecting twins was in pain, but arrived at the hospital "fully conscious and in good physical condition."

The first fetus died on December 23, but doctors refused to remove it citing current abortion legislation. "Agnieszka's condition deteriorated very quickly after that," the family said on Facebook on Wednesday.

A week later, on December 29, the heart of the second fetus also stopped. However, doctors waited another two days before manually removing both on December 31.

"All this time, the decaying bodies of unborn sons were inside her. But the medical staff did not forget to call the priest in time to come to the ward and officiate the children's funeral," the family described in an emotional statement.

Agnieszka died on January 25 after weeks of declining health. According to relatives, she died slowly and in pain. According to The Guardian, the family suspects that the woman succumbed to the effects of sepsis. The hospital did not specify the cause of her death in its statement Wednesday.

We demand justice, the family said

"This is proof that the current government has blood on its hands," believes Agnieszka's family, who also published a video showing the woman just before her death. In the footage, he is lying in a hospital bed and is in poor health.

“The contact with the hospital was very bad. She refused to tell us the results of Agnieszka's medical tests, saying that she allegedly did not write permission for her husband or sister," the relatives added, adding that doctors allegedly indicated to them that the woman's death could have been caused by BSE, known as mad cow disease, or the neurodegenerative Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease disease.

The hospital did not respond to these claims. "After the first child died, we waited because there was a chance to save the second child. Despite the doctors' efforts, the second fetus also died," she told tvn24, adding that the doctors immediately decided to terminate the pregnancy, however, the patient's body did not respond to their procedures and they performed the abortion only on December 31.

They added that Agnieszka had tested positive for the coronavirus before her death, although she had tested negative twice before. "We emphasize that the hospital staff took all necessary measures to save the patient," she pointed out.

“We demand justice and compensation for the death of our wife, mother, sister and friend. Once again a pregnant, innocent young woman, mother and wife died. She is survived by three children who will never see their mother come home again," the relatives said.

“She just wanted to live. Who is to blame? HOSPITAL? Constitutional Court? A member of parliament who voted for the anti-abortion law in Poland?" relatives recount, saying that they are now in contact with the hospital's employees, who confirmed to them that its management had published false information about the circumstances of the twins' deaths.

The District Prosecutor's Office in Czestochowa started an investigation into the case on Wednesday, but on Thursday transferred it to Katowice, where a department specializing in medical malpractice operates. Investigators said an autopsy, which will be performed in the coming days, will determine the exact cause of death.

Doctors fear retribution, so they don't act

Agnieszka's death comes just months after Poland was outraged in the fall by the death of 30-year-old Izabella from the town of Pszczyna, who succumbed to sepsis because doctors waited for the fetus to die instead of performing an abortion. A subsequent investigation revealed that medical negligence led to Izabela's death.

The Polityka weekly, citing the Federation for Women and Family Planning, writes that in recent months, it has become increasingly common in Polish hospitals that gynecologists refuse to perform abortions on pregnant patients who are completely absent from amniotic fluid or have a shortage of it.

They send women home with a recommendation to watch themselves. "Doctors are waiting for the fetus to stop beating, even though they know it will happen and the defect is fatal. We expected that some change would come after the Pszczyna case, but it didn't," said the head of the Federation, Krystyna Kacpurová.

The fetus does not have to die before the abortion, they decided in Poland after the death of pregnant Izabela

Pregnancy can now be legally terminated in Poland only if it is the result of rape or incest or if it threatens the mother's life. However, according to the media, doctors prefer to refuse to perform an abortion even in cases where the mother's life is in danger, out of fear of punishment.

Until last year's decision of the Constitutional Court, which is dominated by judges appointed by the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, abortions were permissible in three cases: when the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest, when it threatened the life of the mother, and when doctors found severe damage to the fetus .

For this last reason, there were the most legal abortions, almost a thousand a year. According to the Constitutional Court, however, this very provision contradicted the Polish constitution, i.e. a woman must give birth even to a severely damaged child.
