The Ostrava Escort Center is celebrating its first birthday with new premises<

During the period of operation, the Guidance Center (CP) at the FN Ostrava has already helped more than a hundred parents. Among them was mother Pavlína Šilerová, whose second son Tobias was diagnosed by doctors with Di Georg syndrome. The family arrived at the Escort Center when the boy was in critical condition. "Tobík was born in July 2020 with a heart defect that is part of Di George syndrome and had to be solved surgically. In March of this year, he underwent a tracheostomy due to respiratory failure. And in May, they operated on his heart on extracorporeal circulation. He handled everything wonderfully and we are happy that he has a fighter in him and a smile on his face all the time," confided the mother. According to her, the guidance center is a wonderful help for parents who are going through similar moments. "The center also helped us a lot with the selection of the foundation that supports us."

Help in difficult times is provided not only to parents of children with rare diseases, but also to children with severe disabilities, after serious injuries, with failure of vital functions, with oncological diseases or children in multidisciplinary follow-up. "We also offer our services to families of small patients from other departments of the university hospital, such as the Department of Pediatric Neurology, the Department of Neonatology, but we are also open to cooperation with other workplaces that provide care to pediatric patients," added Mgr. Iva Kuzníková, Ph.D. head of the Ostrava CP.

The head of the Department of Children's Medicine FNO doc. MD Michal Hladík, Ph.D. together with the primary MUDr. Tomáš Pískovský, Ph.D. Both of them greatly supported the creation of a place where parents can feel comfortable and safe, as if they were not even in the hospital. "From the beginning, we consulted with the architect Ondřej Turon about the equipment of the center. He designed the rooms so that the environment has a therapeutic and supportive effect. We believe that here, at least partially, families will be relieved from experiencing difficult situations for a while. The important thing is that we no longer have to share private information and feelings in corridors, rooms or boxes. And we also prepared a corner for children," revealed Iva Kuzníková.

Medical social workers help families in the short term directly during hospitalization or in the long term even after discharge, when the child remains in outpatient care. "As a pediatric pulmonologist, I also take care of children who are seriously ill, with tracheostomies or who require oxygen or mechanical support. For these parents, it is often very difficult to secure all the tools necessary to care for a child at home and to find their way around the possibilities of psychosocial support. And that's where the support of the Guidance Center is invaluable. A big help is the feeling that families are not alone in this and have someone with whom they can calmly discuss their concerns or a change in their social situation," said MUDr. Veronika Mohylová, who works at the Department of Children's Medicine of the Ostrava University Hospital. The monitoring center operates in five hospitals

The goal of the Support Center is to support the family from the moment they learn of an unfavorable diagnosis, through the first stages of coping with the new reality, to the transfer of the family to the care of services available from the place of residence. From 2020, the Všeobecná zdravotno pojišťovna decided to pay for care Implementation in five hospitals. Gradually, other health insurance companies also joined. The Ostrava workplace continues the activities of the existing centers in Prague, Brno and Hradec Králové.

"We greatly appreciate the attitude of the vast majority of health care payers towards the Executor service. There is a significant chance to expand Implementation centers to other health care providers. The Ostrava Hospital, its management and the management of the clinics have been very responsible for the creation of the much-needed care for child patients in Northern Moravia," said Prof. M.Sc. PaedDr. Jan Michalík, founder and head of CP in the Czech Republic.
