The first ever preparatory class will be opened in Poruba. It should work from the new school year at the Jan Šoupal Elementary School for children who are not yet in the first grade and repeating the last year of kindergarten would not move them anywhere at all.

Petr Nilius, psychologist: "The preparatory class is one of the possible tools when we can work with the child within the natural age group, when we can more individualize the preparation. It looks more like a school, but it's no longer a kindergarten." Martin Tomášek, Deputy Mayor of the Ostrava-Poruba Municipality: "At the same time, when entering a normal school, they would encounter the school rules, the duties that await them there. Preparatory class is something in between. Such a school incubator."

Children come to the preparatory class for 4 hours a day, of which two hours are spent studying and the other two hours are spent playing various games.

Milan Chalupa, director of ZŠ J. Šoupala: "We already planned to open a preparatory class last year. Unfortunately, it failed. Given that the number of pupils in preparatory classes can be from 10 to 15 according to the law, and last year we had 9 pupils apply. We wondered a little about how this is possible, because in some cities the preparatory classes work and they work excellently, so we were inspired by others as well, and I assume that by doing a little bit of it, there was also awareness that we will succeed in the preparatory class open.”

Delays are increasing in Poruba. The best solution for children are preparatory classes

Not only in Poruba, there is a risk that the last years of kindergartens will be overcrowded. Every year, more and more parents request a postponement of school attendance for their child.

Petr Nilius, psychologist: "We did a screening in Poruba, so it turns out that we can assume 15-25% delays in the increase compared to the previous year, when it was basically almost every fourth or fifth child. It is therefore not usually as a reason. Parents shouldn't be afraid at this point, they should have a little faith in the school system that it can handle it. I personally prefer that the children go with their peers."

For the postponement of school attendance, a recommendation from the school counseling facility and a specialist doctor or clinical psychologist is necessary. However, the principal of the catchment school, or the school chosen by the child's parents, always has the last word. Details on the application for the preparatory class can be found on the Šoupala Elementary School website.
