Unfortunately, a large proportion of deep skin injuries occur in children. “Ninety percent of pediatric patients are scalded toddlers. There are fewer burns from open fire in older children, because they often sit at home at the computer," says Robert Zajíček, head of the Department of Burn Medicine at the Královské Vinohrady University Hospital.

What led you to the idea of ​​working in such a specific field as burns? As it happens, an interplay of coincidences. In medicine, I went to help my colleagues in plastic surgery, then I worked in general surgery in a small hospital near Prague, and after a while I wanted to return to Prague. The only free place was on burns. And I have already stayed here because the field grabbed me.

Can you leave the suffering of especially burned children behind the hospital doors and not drag their stories into your life?Yes and no. I sure do, because otherwise I'd go crazy. Certainly not, because I often constantly think about the condition of patients. At home, a person reflects on what happened at work and looks for ways to help.
