Canadian scientists have published a study in which they claim that a dog understands an average of 89 words and phrases. Which words are they? And which breeds understand best?

Catherine Reeve and Sophie Jacques, two Canadian researchers from Dalhousie University's Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, gathered 165 dog owners from around the world and found out how their pets react to different words and commands. The condition was that all owners had to speak English to the dogs.

And record the words the dogs respond to and the number of them. The researchers defined the dogs' reactions as excitement, searching for an object or person, looking up, wagging their tail, running, whining or obeying a command.
