Talks Vašo Patejdl from Elán: Jožo needed oxygen. He was completely done!<

You don't listen to music at home?

It is true. Now I am more or less calm, but when I have the terms that I do, and I have to work in the studio from morning to midnight, of course the next morning I will not get up and I will not let go of the radio, certainly not. When I listen to something, it is purely for study inspirational reasons to know what is happening in the music world.

Does his wife and son have no problem with that?Do they sometimes want to play at home at least under the background for the atmosphere?

They can. When I need peace, I close in the studio and they do what they want.We have a son who is quite noisy, likes to speak aloud, sometimes reminds me of Uncle Pepin of Postřižiny, as he comments on everything, so how many times the door closes and they do not disturb me.But when we go on a trip, we play music or radio, I'm tolerant.

Will you sound carols at home?

Certainly.I always prepare the whole stack of boards. From violin to classic ones that sing children's choirs. We play them from morning to evening.

Do you play your record too?

One day, but not because of me.My family, as far as music is concerned, is quite considered, I do not have to show off, but I did the CD to bring people joy, so I hope it will bring it to them.

The songs are not so unknown, one has already appeared in the film…

I wrote them, whenever a offer came or my friends were approached.I have composed quite a lot over the years, but none for myself. To now.So next to the song from the fairy tale When the dragon hurts the head I sang, there are also two news. One is called Adam and Eva, which is a Czechoslovak duet, because I sang it with Heidi Janků, and the other is a magical night.I wanted to have a carol album long ago, but there was still no time.In the summer there were festivals, followed by various performances and suddenly came November and I found that I could not make it again. But with Korona we canceled all the concerts, so I stayed at home, remembered that I wanted to shoot a Christmas record…

… And you discovered the song Slavni omnímné words with Marika Gombitová.

It was first published in 1987 on Espéčka, where I worked with Richard Müller and Jankom Lehotský.I put the original on my new CD now, it is included as a bonus and the remaining ten songs is re -recorded.

How does Marika live today, are you in contact?

Unfortunately, not much anymore, although just a few days ago my colleague called me that Marika is about to release the album, and asked me if I would send him a musical foundation for the song I did with her for the last time. That was five years ago when she sang the Pribeh for our dream stood on the film Seven Raves. But since then we have not contacted much.Maybe it's because I live in Prague and I don't go to Bratislava much. She lives in her environment, I like to return to her family and those opportunities such as the Lýra Bratislava and other festivals, where musicians from all over Czechoslovakia met is not much. And we weren't such friends again that we would visit each week.

But you wrote her a lot and also produced the record ...

Her name was the Soul Studio. There is also a very well -known coliseum or duet with Karel Gott an unknown couple. It was released at Opus in 1987 and it was very nice work.

It was Marika in a wheelchair…

Yes, but still active. It wasn't until later that she closed himself a little. But her story is difficult (in 1980, as a result of a traffic accident, Marika Gombitová paralyzed), so I understand it.But the cooperation was pleasant.

Why is no one else with such a voice here?Or did you come across someone?

Of course, each voice is different. They were here and there are also various excellent singers, but it is true that Marika is terribly typical of the first listening. From the first note she sings, everyone knows it's her. This is the gift you get into the wine, and then it is important how you can work with it so that you, as sometimes becomes, miss, do not waste and praise it with various excesses.Marika has always been very hardworking, and it was amazing that what she touched, she made it to an excellent result. It is terribly important to realize that Marika is not just a singer, eighty percent of the things she has ever sung, composed herself. He is a very strong talented personality.

Did you not miss your talent, who encouraged you in your youth to set out in this way?

Rozhovory Vašo Patejdl z Elánu: Jožo potřeboval kyslík. Byl úplně vyřízený!

When Jož and I founded Elán in 1968, the talent competitions of today's type were not here.So we invented our career ourselves and planned what we want to achieve. At first we wanted to get an apparatus, then fold our own songs… We were doing it for twelve years before we got to the Opus studio, and it wasn't even that someone would help us fundamentally. We just offered them.

Nobody motivated you at home, did not pushed you?

My dad played the accordion, and because he knew how difficult the musician life was, he didn't want to let me go to the conservatory. He said, "You are either the best in the music or play the second violin and just worry." He was right. I know a lot of great musicians who, unfortunately, did not overwhelm the last step leading to fame and feed on bars. But after graduation, I decided to continue to focus on music and submitted an application for the College of Music and Performing in Bratislava. Straight on the composition. I don't understand that they took me. I never admitted to my professor Moyzes that I was playing big beat. I was afraid that they wouldn't rule me out of school. But I think he knew it anyway, because when I graduated - I composed a prelude to the big symphony orchestra played by the Slovak Philharmonic - he wrote me an excellent report, and he wished me good luck in the area I want to devote to me that I'm good for it. So it was probably the encouragement and confirmation that it made sense. I appreciate it today.

You studied a composition that Jožo caliber psychology and played with you for some time and the evangelical priest.Did your professions have any influence on the band's operation?Maybe Jožo had some calming methods…

Jožo really not, he was not very reassuring (laughs). On the contrary, he constantly opposed and ripped the surface. But we were already a democratic band at that time, we voted about everything and everyone had the right of veto. That's why it probably lasted until today.I mean friendship and mutual respect. At that time we had 250 concerts a year, I was at home for two months and had little kids.So I gave notice. The band's set then changed a few times and one of my successors behind the keys was Ľubo Horňák.He had a station graduated, but I do not know if he was a priest. After eleven years I returned to the band and I remember that Ľubo and Jož, sometimes joined Jano Baláž, who has an unfinished pharmacy, always dealt with some wisdom. What, when, where, who, how… I was more of a pragmatist.I focused mainly on musical affairs, arrangements… But it is true that their philosophical debates were interesting.

Benjamin's son goes to the seventh grade, you have already put together in the eighth… has similar desires?

It is different every time. One day he starts a group, another wants to play drums, then on the piano again ... We'll see what will be in a year. I don't know if I already wanted a band at twelve. Maybe I really thought about the fourteen. But it is true that today children have completely different priorities. And unfortunately, or thankfully, those phones, computers and other sources of entertainment they use are very difficult to filter out to do only one thing. We wish with his wife to have a general education to play sports and devote a little music. So he plays the piano, but it has periods. He enjoys it once, not the second time. Mostly when I stand over him and scream. But that's normal. It is said that the worst teacher is his own parent because he has no distance and patience. I regret that sometimes I explode, but when we calm down, Benjamin goes to play the piano myself and I don't talk to him. Skilful is, so we'll see. I also started to enjoy it more only when I found out what the benefits were. That I can boast something in front of the girls, and thus be a little more interesting for them than others.

How are the sons of the first marriage with music?

Wenceslas is a lawyer, not to take it unlike the younger Robert. He played the piano by himself, I did not have to force him.Until today, he performs with his own band. But I also told him, just like my dad: “Start a practical school and see. When you make a living, you can do music. ”Matfyz studied, and I think he's quite happy, even if he doesn't have music as a major profession.

They both experienced a great glory of enthusiasm, how did they face it in their youth?

This is a philosophical question. I do not know myself. I didn't give the family very much. The older I am, the more I realize what it means. Maybe thanks to the coronavirus epidemic, when I am at home and I have time to spare, I wonder what I could do better. But it wasn't possible. When I wanted to make music one hundred percent, I couldn't be a good dad at the same time. We haven't experienced much, which I regret, but nothing can be done about it. Much remained on my ex -wife. I just had a little concern to give the eldest son the name Wenceslas, although it was at a time when I had no idea how it would be with the enthusiasm. The son was born when we basically started. But in the family it is a tradition. Both Dad and Grandpa were Wenceslas, so it was natural that he would also be called. When I became famous, I began to doubt if it was good, if it was more of a bear service. But he always said he had no problem with that, it's fine.

So no mockery at school, bullying or envy?

I think not.Rather, it seems to me that the youngest, Benjamin, has a bit of a problem.Sometimes he misses, “Everyone thinks that when I am your son Patejdl, I have to know everything best. And I can't do that well. ”He puts his demands on himself. He is aware that he should be good, and he does not always succeed. Then he is sometimes derailed and unhappy.

Again, it is not a phlegmatic ... What songs did the boys like to do?

We didn't discuss it at home much, but I think the stuntman was generally popular.I remember that they sang it as little. But I did with Beáta Dubas and Peter Nagy CD with children's songs long ago because of children and my own.I even had my own program Vašo Patejdl on Slovak Television, where I brought the children closer to the music, and every work was created a song on the topic we discussed.

Which Elánovská likes Benjamin?

I have to ask my wife, I really do not know.(laughs) I don't blame him, he knows it since I was young. He attended every dad's concert.

You say you do not like to perform, so you probably welcomed that now you are off the corona.Or are you sad after the audience?

It's half and half. Most cool I'm here at home in the studio behind the piano.I always have a little nervous on the stage. It is not stage fright, rather such a responsibility.

Even after those years with enthusiasm?!Although it is true that you were not there as a soloist.

Well, in the band you get lost. And what we will talk about, everything focused on Joža (Jožo Ráž, singer and co -founder of Elán, ed.).People often asked me if we were in the vigor of knives when he was singing, why I don't sing more.I said to them, "It suits me absolutely. I'm in a famous band, I sing something here and let me eat all the glory." He was and is the right type.He was sitting in the studio. That's why I left the band in 1985.

This was written everywhere, but I still don't believe it to this day.Didn't you want a solo track?

Not really.I was leaving and didn't know what to do.Only by coincidence I found the offer to make music for the film Fountain Pre Zuzana. At the same time, I had the only song in the stock - Ak Nie was Moja.I gave everyone away, and I was wondering about this to give it to someone.I finally sang it myself.

Somehow we booked it, so do you want to perform?

I like fifty to eighty concerts a year. But not two hundred.I like playing live, because when I'm just in the studio, it's a submarine. It has always been a big show with Elán: trucks, security, I don't know what all ... Every two years we went on tour. Now that we say with my band that we are going to play, we all come with our car, unload the tools ourselves, we do not have to have a rehearsal… Then we play and there is such a great atmosphere that we can't look forward to it.Even the contact with the audience ... When he sings unlaceded with us, and not Moja and the stuntman and we see how he enjoys ... I miss this, but that I would cling to it, no.

In what state of mood is the enthusiasm?Do you take at least exclusive orders, is it possible that you play at a private party?

We really packed it, it's been two years since we didn't play.We just produced the musical water (and blood) above the water we met, but no concert, we did no show.

And do you get such offers?

We get.I always call Jož, tell him what it is and whether he wants to go or not.Mostly he says no.We'll see what happens next.Whether there is a very interesting offer, or if there will be Koronavirus for a long time and there will be no more business… Never say never.Pay orders need to be paid.Of course we have savings, but nothing is endless.Meanwhile, the enthusiasm "sleeps", and if in a few years the mood will do something, I have no idea. But because we are always planning two years ahead, I know that at least by 2023 there will be nothing.

And in 2024, they had to lie down first in the oxygen tent to get into a mold before the concert, right?

That was already here.Jožo used to be so exhausted after the concerts, even before the accident (in 1999 Jožo Ráž crashed on a motorcycle and was in a coma for two months, ed.) That we had an ambulance with an oxygen bomb behind the stage.Occasionally they took him there because he really lived and sang so fully that sometimes he had little oxygen. For example, we had ten concerts in a row, it's not really fun.

Now I'm not surprised he doesn't miss. How often do you see each other?

Little.Jožo is at home, basically does not come out.He lives as he planned, with a cigar and a glass of whiskey in his hand. With Ján Baláž we sometimes call, he would go to perform immediately if Jožo said yes.Of the three of us, he would probably do the most.

You have a Czech wife, but you grew up in Slovakia and found the first family. What are your Christmas, which of the traditions do you follow?

We make fish soup, carp and potato salad. In Slovakia, we cooked lens soup on Christmas Eve to make money.I do Kapustnica for the New Year, if I don't know somewhere. That's my specialty, I enjoy it.We will not hold any other traditions. But we go pray in the afternoon to the church, they make midnight for children.

You have two grandchildren, are you meeting?

The boys, unfortunately, live at the opposite end of Prague, which is a bit of a problem. So we are not in contact as often as I wish. But I understand it's complicated.I am gone at the weekend, and if I can, they can't.But we'll see about the holidays.
