The Czech Republic has over 10.7 million inhabitants. In the first nine months of this year, it increased by 13,900 to 10.71 million. The increase was almost 60 percent lower year on year. More people in the Czech Republic died before they were born in the first three quarters, so the increase in population was due to immigrants from abroad. This follows from data published on Monday by the Czech Statistical Office (CSO).

In the Czech Republic, almost 85,000 people died in the first nine months of this year, approximately 1,000 more than in the same period last year. On the other hand, the number of children born fell by 2,600 to 83,300. Almost half of them were born out of wedlock.

While in the first and second quarters the number of deaths was very similar year on year, in the third quarter statistics recorded four percent more deaths than last year. The main reason was the September year-on-year increase in the number of deaths by eight percent.

The CZSO does not state the reasons for the year-on-year increase in mortality, but the covid-19 epidemic probably contributed to it. According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, 9,600 people with proven coronavirus have died since the epidemic began in March this year.

This year, most people immigrated to the Czech Republic from Ukraine. Slovaks and Russians followed.
