The model just can't be just a hanger for a dress, it must be a personality<

Prague is deserted by Prague on 20 December. Most of the inhabitants of the Czech Republic have not yet been able to finish their Christmas supplies. In men's modeling, however, the holidays do not hold so much, not to mention the fried carp and mayonnaise salad.Models must be in the form: already on January 1, most of them start their annual carousel of castings and shows in London, Milan and Paris, who will end up sometime in February for the less lucky ones.

In order to take a picture of the two Czech modeling stars, we had to interrupt their festive rest before the work was fully absorbed. They did not resist.Even though they learned about the photo shoot just a day in advance, their professionalism won over homemade, in their native cities sat on a train and traveled over half the republic to arrive at Prague's Grove studio exactly at 11:55.

Topmodel Robin Barnet

Robin Barnet

Robin Barnet (24) comes from Lanškroun. After graduating from high school focusing on information systems and logistics in transport, he began to model modeling and showed for brands such as Versace, Kenzo, Ermemegildo Zegna or Etro.He shot a lookbook for Gucci. In Japan, thanks to the Samsung billboard at the Tokyo intersection of Shibuya and other campaigns, it has literally become a star.In the Czech Republic, Robin appeared in the Pietro Filipi campaign, and has also made a number of editorials. You can also see it in our Mucha house. You can learn more about it from his Instagram www.instagram.cz/robinbarnet.

Esprit: You are divided by a whole modeling generation, so I have to ask: How did you actually become men's models?

Robin: I was 16 when my nurse sent my photos to agencies. There were a few of them, so my parents and I started to go around them.At that time, Elite won it.But I did not sign any contract and I was one of two hundred boys in the portfolio of their casting division.I did modeling just by the way when I had a holiday at school. Then came 2008, when the world finals of the Elite Model Look competition took place in Prague. They chose me from the agency to distribute drinks at the event. It was only the environment in common with modeling. But it was at the event that the main bookmen noticed me with whom I did not come into contact before. And so it started. The next day they sent me to the hairdresser, the contract began to be solved, I did the first photoests. In the summer of 2010 came my first season in Milan.

Josef: For me it started six months ago.Scout from Elite saw my photo of a graduation table that the photographer was posting on Facebook.I have never thought about doing modeling before, but I thought that if someone had contacted me, I would try.It was a new chance of life and I was wondering how far I could get…

Esprit: And you got to the world finals in China, where you finished third.

Josef: It was all a coincidence. Before that I studied grammar school in Holešov, I played handball for eight years, cycling, running.I thought that after my graduation, only student life in Prague awaited me when I was admitted to computer science at CTU.Meanwhile, the news came from Elite and my life has changed.

Esprit: European fashion weeks are held in January.Do you know what awaits you?

Josef: What I know for sure is that I leave on January 5 to Paris, where I have the first castings. Then I fly to London for five days, from London for a week to Milan and then back to Paris. What to expect from Fashion Week, I don't know.Robin outlined me something, but when I see what the next weeks they would bring (Josef appeared during the Milan and London Fashion Week at six brands, including Gucci, Missoni and Salvatore Ferragamo).

Robin: A lot of kilometers await you. When I had my first season, fourteen castings awaited me a day and I was glad I had Deli.

ESPRIT: Can you be more specific?

Robin: The first day you arrive in Paris, you go to the agency to check you. They come with a camera and a camera, see how you walk, tell you what style of walking is suitable for Paris, what Milan.

Esprit: What should I imagine under it?

Robin: It's more commercial in Milan. They want classically nice boys, straightened walking. Paris is looser, you can go there as you want. There are simply rules that one should follow to walk like others. The joke is that despite the rules, the model must do it in its own way. He must be his and go to make it natural. If you focus on it, the most successful model is quite different from the rest. When I was a show Ermemegildo Zegna, casting director sorted us and says, "Do you know why you here, why did we choose you? You are good, but it is not. You have a distinctive walk! ”And that is. Take a look at Charlie France (one of the most successful models of the present). Everyone says, "Look as he walks, as his hands blame, horror." But it is in his difference that lies. Thanks to this, he has been so successful and he has built his career. The model just can't just be a clothes hanger, it must be a personality. The way you face the show depends on a specific client. Armani, for example, says he wants "Happy Smile Mood". In Paris they will say "Strong fast walk". But there are many other expressions that have to be able to express - sexy Attitude, Feel Rich ...

Esprit: But let's go back to the castings. How are they going?

Model prostě nemůže být jen věšák na šaty, musí to být osobnost

Robin: You will arrive in Paris on January Fifth, staying, and during the day the agency will send you a list of all castings for the next day.In the evening you have to sit down, take a map and make a time program with places so that you do not run from one end of the city to the other.Castings are not in the same place. When I started, there were no smart mobiles yet, so I walked around the city with a paper map.One cannot waste time. Some castings invite only ten models and you have to come there in time, otherwise you are unlucky.Castings take place from 10 to 11, followed by a pause and another from 3 pm to 6 pm.The problem is that one never knows how long he will wait. You come somewhere and there are three hundred boys, so you say it's two hours and wait.Elsewhere there are a thousand boys and you may not even be interested in the show, so you give up and go to the next casting.

Esprit: seriously?I do not want to believe that you will fight for a thousand -headed crowd ...

Robin: About sixteen hundred boys regularly arrive at Milan at Fashion Week and only thirty of them get to the show. Gucci or Armani already have their permanent models, so they only choose from some twenty new faces. But then a rich client from Asia comes, invites everyone and is already grinding. When a man comes after an hour of waiting, it's different every time. Usually you come before casting directory and they will tell you to walk through. Then it is either or - they say goodbye or give you clothes. Then you walk in that look and they just turn on something. But sometimes you spend an hour there and try the entire collection. You just like them so much that they want you, but you still don't fit into any clothes. When it works, two days follow a call back (meeting) with a designer where the last twenty boys invite. There they dress in the final look. Fitting follows (clothing test) that has been for a long time. The clothes sew directly for a particular model. Usually it is two to three days before the show. But sometimes even at the last minute. For example, when I was a Kenzo show, the seamstresses stained my clothes ten minutes before the show. Then I had a lot to do to wash my hands before I came out on the pier.

Esprit: What tricks would you advise Joseph?

Robin: We've already talked about it.It is important to keep a look at all castings. They must monitor and estimate which brands are potentially suited.I think Pepa could be successful with Burberry. There it is about nature. He has to come up with his head and not play any theater.Just show your individuality.Pep's advantage is his name, which many will remember thanks to its placement in the final of the Elite Model Look. But there is not much advice to give.Every season is completely different. He may have a season when everyone will frown on him and no one will notice him.And in six months he will have fifteen shows. It's about chance.

Esprit: Let the shows now. What else does the work of Model mean?

Robin: Man will literally become a traveler. He also has to get used to the fact that he is still waiting for something. What most people hate is our job.

Josef: That's exactly what I talked about in my first interview. They asked what I hated, and I replied that waiting.I didn't know what to expect.Robin: The job is also a lot about flexibility. One can plan a holiday, but then comes an interesting order and you have to choose.

Model Josef Utěkal

Josef Utěkal

Josef Utěkal (20) was born in Moravské Prusinovice. He graduated from the grammar school in Holešov and is currently studying computer science at CTU.His biggest success so far is the victory in the Czech-Slovak final of the Schwarzkopf Elite Model Look 2014 and the third place in the world final, where he fought with 20 other models from around the world.A great placement was brought by a two -year contract with a guaranteed earnings of Elite. His first professional photo shoot was for the November Esprit Lidové noviny, where the photographer Petr Jandera accompanied the interview with the designer Alexanderwang. You can learn more about it from his Instagram www.instagram.cz/josef.utekal.

Esprit: So I assume that you don't have much time for personal life.

Robin: I believe someone can do it.I see with my family, that's clear. But waiting for a girlfriend for half a year and working through Skype is not for me.When I think about it, I haven't been able to combine work with a relationship.

Josef: I can imagine that when the relationship is still fresh and you leave for two months to the other end of the world, it is unsustainable ... But I have been with my girlfriend for quite a long time and I believe our relationship can bear it.

Josef: It's really hard. The agency will send you to a week abroad, then you will notice another client and there are three from one week. Then another work will be added and you are away for a quarter of a year.I have the advantage that I always had a relationship in second place. One has to do this work to the fullest and cannot be limited by something at home.If it is financially interesting, you have to accept it and sacrifice everything that is needed.

Esprit: The truth is that there is no big care in men's modeling. Why?

Robin: The point is that there are model and model. For example, Male of the year competitions completely distort reality to people.

Josef: That's true.Because of similar competitions in our country, people perceive men's modeling much worse than abroad.I mean people can have a distorted idea of what the model should look like.

Robin: The crown is deployed by the wannabe model who goes to the party, they are photographed from tabloid photographers, and our profession make a bad name. The truth is that no fool will not get into the world modeling.People may think that we have not taken much wisdom, but when you travel and find out who is working in the business, it is surprised at how all they are. When a fool comes to casting, they never choose it, because by their expression and behavior honestly, I do not know much top model. When I was recently on the Tereza Maxová's show, there was such a pretty woman in a red dress.I asked a friend who he was, and he looked at me like a fool.It was Karolína Kurková.But why should I be interested in women's modeling? It's a completely different world.

Josef: Exactly.I had no idea about modeling before they were inkuuted.I think most Czechs have that.could spoil the image of the brand.

Esprit: I recently read a poll in which Czechs mentioned as the most famous top model Marcus Schenkenberg. What do you think about it?(silence) You don't know who it is?This was a famous model sometime in the 1990s.

Robin: Well, I admit that if I didn't do modeling, I don't know anyone either.

Esprit: You both come from small towns. How do they look at your success?

Josef: I wonder how people perceive me.I'm from a village that has just over a thousand inhabitants, everyone knows me there. On social networks some of my friends shared photos and articles about me and there I meet more positive reactions.

Robin: When I started, people didn't have much. They said, "Oh yeah, gay!" They didn't understand what I was doing at all. Then they began to notice me in the newspapers and magazines, found that I was successful, and turned one hundred and eighty degrees.I don't know if there was envy.Anyway, people don't show me anymore. They come, shake my hand, ask how I am.It often happens to me that someone comes to me and tells me, "I'll tell you, I thought you were terribly arrogant. And you're a normal boy. ”I don't know what it is, maybe we grew up.Maybe we're wiser.

Esprit: Thanks to this work, you can become stars that people on the street normally get to know.

Robin: I felt it most in Tokyo, it was extreme. At that time I got a campaign for Samsung.Coincidentally, it was at a time when Samsung rented a giant billboard on Shibuy, the largest intersection in the world. It's like the Times Square, but many times larger. So it happened that my face hung there across the wall for about a quarter of a year. Then people recognized me, stopped me in clubs and wanted to take pictures with me.When I realize that even David Beckham, singers, actors, there were really funny. It was all a big coincidence. At that time, the manager advised me to take a jacket for casting. When I came, I was the only one who had it, and I got the campaign.Sometimes it just depends on the details.

Esprit: Asia has recently been a place where everyone is heading. Why is it so popular?

Robin: It is no longer true that everyone is successful there. Today it is not easy to get there. The models are clouds and have already started to choose and refuse in Asia. I go there because I always get guaranteed revenue for a month. I'm going there for thirty days and I have some earnings plus something extra. When you have a name from Europe and an interesting book, where you see that you have followed European brands, you also receive more lucrative orders. I was doing an Asian lookbook for Calvin Klein, Cerutti, Levi’s. When I came to Hong Kong after my first season, everyone knew I went in Milan Versace and Zegna. In two months I managed to shoot seventeen campaigns and suddenly I was on the buses everywhere. These Asian roads are good for us mainly because we are in the Elite agency, which takes care of our orders. The other model goes there for three months, but they have nothing certain. It's such a chundr - and then he usually returns home with empty.

Esprit: Do you take your face on the bus as the greatest success?

Esprit: Naomi Campbell has several hundred expressions that alternate during the photo shoot. How are you doing?

Robin: I think it's nonsense. Each model changes the expression with the click of the trigger.Rather, I think a active journalist took the job and calculated all her expressions in the photos.Josef: I also think so many expressions can not be had.Depending on what I have experienced, it also depends a lot on the photographer how to catch a person.

Esprit: Legends are said about eating models. How are you?

Josef: I have always liked to do sports and I am naturally skinny. It is a fact that I have eased since September, but I would like to go back to training. For the model it is good to run, exercise on the stomach and breast. But I became interested in a healthy lifestyle before they chose me for modeling. Not that I exaggerated, but I think more about what I eat.I think that as boys we do more sports, and thanks to that we can enjoy the food.

Robin: Exactly.A bunch of boys get up and go bury or play basketball. Then we can eat everything. When I started modeling, I smoked. But over the years I stopped and started eating a lot healthier. One simply finds that if you have fourteen castings, it is not enough for him just a dumpling and energy gained with biscuits. As a result, when I am abroad, I eat healthy, but when I come home to Lanškroun, I eat what it is.I must not talk because my grandmother cooks.

Esprit: What awaits you in the near future?

Josef: We'll see what interested will be about me.I know one thing, however, I want to devote myself to the job so I can never blame myself for giving up.I just want to put on it and see how long the achievements will take.My dream is now on weeks of fashion to go show Burberry, Vivienne Westwood and Prada.

Robin: I will miss Fashion Week this year.I have another interesting contract. But in January I will be 24, and although it is not a modeling pension, I like to make excuses for it.I just want to try something new.So far I do not want to be specific, but I am preparing a project associated with tourism, in which I will use experience in travel and abroad.I've never studied this field, but modeling allowed me to get to know it well.
