Maty's world: Autism spectrum disorder and a new therapeutic method

He looks like a very lively child, jumping and running around a lot. He likes to go out or go on trips. His mother, Gabriela Průšová, explains that his disorder is manifested mainly by complicated behavior.

He was calm as a newborn. It wasn't until he was a year and a half that he became restless and distracted. "He didn't repeat himself, he did the same things. Of course, he could play, but only with a certain toy, he was distracted, impatient and lively," describes Gábina.

The child psychiatrist subsequently wrote in the report on Matyáš's diagnosis that the boy is inattentive, not independent, lacks perseverance, is meticulous and has stereotypical interests.

Maty's day

Maty must necessarily have an exact daily routine. In the morning, after breakfast, the program is learned from pictures.

“He is then better able to prepare for what will follow. I must not say the word 'out'. He doesn't see or hear that, he goes to the shoe store, takes his shoes and wants to go out," Gábina explains how planning a normal day looks like.

Maty is mostly friendly to those around her. The problem arises when someone hurts him. "As soon as a little violence is shown, Matyášek immediately withdraws, gets hysterical," says Gábina about Maty's reactions.

Parents of Matyáš came across a therapeutic method that helps him significantly. She exercises daily with her mother. The method has the abbreviation ABA. Among other things, it also involves the use of sign language to communicate with autistic people. You will learn more about the ABA method in the second part of the series.
