Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz triumphed in the summer. He plastered the streets of Austrian cities with posters with his likeness and the slogan: "We managed the pandemic, we ended the crisis." A few months passed and the Austrian government had to implement one of the strictest lockdowns in the world. But Kurz was no longer Chancellor. The still only thirty-five-year-old man, nicknamed Wunderkind (miracle child), was until recently referred to as the star not only of the Austrian, but also of the pan-European right. This year, however, several serious affairs broke his political ties.
Kurz resigned in October after the Austrian chancellery building was searched by the police. According to the investigators, the chancellor, together with a circle of his closest collaborators, committed corruption, for example. But Kurz remained a member of parliament and head of the People's Party (ÖVP), Austria's most powerful political force. He was therefore nicknamed the Shadow Chancellor in the media, as it was clear that he continued to control Austrian politics to a large extent. But even that is over – at the beginning of December, Kurz disappeared from all political positions.
