Author ▪ ReutersWhen veteran French politician Valérie Pécresse toured the countryside last summer, she surprised many French people with her self-confidence. "I will be the first female president of France," she told them. Now she really came within sight of the Elysée Palace. A few weeks ago, the fifty-four-year-old woman dominated the primaries of the conservative Republicans and is now among the favorites for the presidential elections that take place this April.
Pécresse never lacked determination and self-confidence. In order to learn Russian as a teenager, she traveled to the Soviet Union several times, which was certainly not common in France at the time. Then, on a state visit to Moscow in 2010, she also surprised Vladimir Putin, the prime minister at the time, with her Russian. When the then French Prime Minister Francois Fillon introduced her to him, saying that she knew his native language, Putin was not surprised. "He was visibly interested in whether I had been trained by the French secret services," she said. "He couldn't believe that someone from the right spoke Russian so well. It seemed very suspicious to him," she told the French newspaper Le Figaro.
