Singer Marika Gombitová has completely closed herself to the world

He has not yet responded to fans' requests to return, start to perform or record new songs. He doesn't even meet his long-term co-workers and friends. "We are almost out of touch. She doesn't pick up the phones or call back, "says her court lyricist Kamil Peteraj, who until recently belonged to a small circle of chosen people who visited Marika.

However, the departure from the limelight was reflected in the results of the Slavík spectator survey. After thirty long years, in 2009 Marika did not place among the top five singers.

"It simply came to our notice then. It's hard to say why it happened right now. The younger years of the singers are promoting themselves, "says the survey producer Pavol Danišovič. The uncrowned queen of Slovak popular song last won the bronze nightingale in 2006.

Marika first placed in the Czechoslovak Golden Nightingale poll in 1977, when she took 47th place. A year later, she made it into the top four and won the first bronze nightingale in 1979. In the same year, she released her first solo album, Girl in the Rain. Since then, she has appeared regularly in the top five in Czechoslovakia and subsequently in Slovakia.

The only woman in a male band

In the Modus group, the small Marika was surrounded by men - Ján Lehotský, Miroslav Žbirka, Laco Lučenič. Sometimes she didn't mind that the guys in the band were ready to take pictures at any time, and she cared about the perfect makeup and hairstyle. The make-up artists did not ride with the bands at that time and she prepared everything herself. She was looking for concert clothes abroad. Marika was there three hours before the concert, checking the settings, the inclination of the microphone, testing the chair behind the keyboard instruments and soaking up the atmosphere of the concert venue.

Fatal accident

Zpěvačka Marika Gombitová se před světem úplně uzavřela

At the end of November 1980, Marika performed in Brno. After the concert, her friend took her along a snowy highway to Bratislava. However, her Renault 5 skidded, flew in the opposite direction, rolled off the highway and overturned several times.

The technicians left Brno later and saw the police and a crashed car on the highway in the opposite direction. However, it never occurred to them that it could be Marika, because at first glance it looked like the car was driving in the opposite direction before the crash.

After the accident, the singer ended up in a wheelchair. The operation in Moscow did not help either. Marika bravely fought her fate. The following year, she performed at the Bratislava Lyre, recorded new songs and sang a duet with Karel Gott. In 1983 she sang in the Prague Lantern.

After 2002, she stopped performing and almost never appeared in public. In 2005 she sang a duet with Miroslav Žbirka. When her song Confession won the Century of the Year poll in 2007, she thanked the fans via radio.

First performance at thirteen

Marika started performing at the age of thirteen with her brothers in the amateur group Matador. While studying at a high school in Košice, she sang with the group Profiles and the orchestra of Juraj Szabadoš. In 1976, she accepted an offer from Ján Lehocký and became a member of the Modus group. The following year, Modus won the Bratislava Lyre with the song Smile. A year later, Marika repeated her victory solo with the song Student Love. In 1979, she won the Silver Lyre for the song Confession and released her first solo album Girl in the Rain. She also scored at a festival in Sopot, Poland, and her star rose steeply. Everything was interrupted by a tragic accident.

Právo made contact with manager Marika Gombitová and asked the singer for an interview. After a while, the manager admitted that Marika would not answer the phone or him and there would probably be nothing in the conversation. In her last interview with Rádio Viva in 2007, Marika stated that she lives a nice life.

"It's worth fighting every day. I do it bravely and I like it. I want to tell everyone that it's worth fighting for and enjoying life with every problem, "she said.
