He designed fashion lines for women and men, his specialty was woolen suits, which he tried to adapt so that they were comfortable for everyday wear. In 1978, the Cerruti fashion house also entered the perfume market.
In the 1980s, Cerruti started working with the film industry. His clothes were worn by Michael Douglas, Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Sharon Stone, Julia Roberts, Robert Redford, Harrison Ford, Al Pacino and Jean-Paul Belmondo. Cerruti also became the official designer for the Ferrari Formula 1 team.

In 2000, Cerruti sold 51 percent of his company and since then has focused his business mainly on running the family's textile factory in the northern Italian town of Biella in the Piedmont region. He died in the nearby city of Vercelli at a hospital where he had been taken for hip surgery, Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported.
"The death of Nino Cerruti has hit me hard. The giant of Italian business has passed away," Italian Deputy Minister for Economic Development Gilberto Pichetto wrote on Twitter. "I will always remember him for his intuition, skill and foresight, thanks to which he made Italian fashion famous worldwide," he added.
