Euro NCAP 2015: VW Touran - Five stars on the first try<

In 2003, the Volkswagen Touran initially won only four stars in Euro NCAP tests for the protection of adult passengers, and only after a re-evaluation was it awarded the full number of five stars. The new Touran did not face similar difficulties this year and received a full five stars.

The subject of the test was the VW Touran 1.6 TDI, with a five-door MPV body, Comfortline equipment and a curb weight of 1483 kg.

The safety equipment of the tested specimen included ESC, three-point seat belts with pretensioner and force limiter on all seats, front, side and head airbags and a driver's knee airbag. The car was also equipped with a seat belt reminder for all seats.

For child protection tests, a G0 Plus ISOFIX car seat was installed against the direction of travel for an 18-month-old child and a G0 ISOFIX Duo Plus car seat with a Top Tether handle in the direction of travel was installed for a three-year-old child.

Adult protection

The passenger compartment remained stable during the frontal impact. The data from the manikins indicate good protection of the driver's and front passenger's thighs and thighs. Touran has proven that this type of impact provides the same protection for passengers of different heights and sitting in different positions.

In a frontal impact across the width of the car, the car gained the full number of points for good protection of all important parts of the driver's body. The protection of the rear seat passengers was good or sufficient.

In both side impact tests, the Volkswagen Touran scored maximum points for good protection of all parts of the body.

The seat and head restraint provide good protection of the cervical spine in the event of a rear-end collision (Whiplash) on all seats.

The autonomous braking system is not standard on the car and has therefore not been evaluated.

Child protection

Touran received the maximum number of points for the protection of a 3-year-old child. The protection of the 18-month-old child was good, except for the limit protection of the chest.

The front passenger airbag can be deactivated to secure the child seat against the direction of travel and the driver has a good overview of the condition of this airbag.

All common types of child car seats can be placed correctly on the rear seats, including third-row seats.

Pedestrian protection

The bumper scored full points for pedestrian protection.

The front edge of the bonnet provides mostly poor pelvic protection. The Touran is equipped with an active hood, which rises when the sensors in the bumper detect contact with the pedestrian to increase the space between its surface and the engine and thus prevent the pedestrian's head from coming into contact with the engine. The system has been proven to work in a wide range of situations and good protection has been achieved over almost the entire bonnet surface.

Poor protection was achieved only in the area around the A-pillars.

Assistance systems

The standard equipment of the Volkswagen Touran is ESC, a belt reminder for all seats, including the third row.

The autonomous braking system performed well in tests of collisions with a slower-moving car, but it is part of the optional equipment and is not expected to be sold in most cars, so it has not been evaluated.

A driver-adjustable cruise control and lane departure warning system are also available at an additional cost.

Overall result: Five stars

The Volkswagen Touran in its new generation will protect both adults and children very well and did not do well in the category of assistance systems. Despite the use of an active bonnet, the most room for improvement is traditionally in the category of pedestrian protection.

What are the limits for awarding a five-star rating in 2015?

The tested car must meet the prescribed percentage of maximum point allocations (weighted average of all 4 categories, see the last column of the following table), but also the partial minimum levels in each category. Specific values are in the table. This year, the weighted average and passenger protection limits have been increased.
