Many European countries will tighten restrictions significantly on Monday due to the ever-increasing spread of coronavirus infection. Austria will open a three-week closure, when people will be allowed to leave home only when absolutely necessary, and will close for tourists. Saxony closes bars, clubs and cancels Christmas markets, and Slovakia and Greece make life much more difficult for the unvaccinated.

Probably the most drastic approach against the pandemic was chosen by Austria, which was the first EU country to reach a national lockdown in this wave. From today, people are only allowed to leave home when they are needed - on their way to work, school, shopping or for medical walks. Restaurants, hotels, most shops will be closed and all events with a larger number of participants will be canceled. The country is completely closed to tourists, including skiers.

The inhabitants of the German federal state of Saxony, which borders the Czech Republic, also face great restrictions. Christmas markets are closed there, clubs, bars and cultural and sports facilities are closing. Unvaccinated, with the exception of supermarkets and drugstores, will not be allowed in shops and restaurants.

In districts where the seven-day average of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants exceeds 1,000, the unvaccinated will not be allowed to leave home from 22:00 to 06:00 the next day without good reason. People without vaccinations will also find it difficult to access indoor public spaces in Schleswig-Holstein.

Unvaccinated restrictions

Leisure opportunities for the unvaccinated will also be reduced in Slovakia and Greece. In Greece, proof of vaccination or recovery from covid-19 is now required to visit cinemas, theaters, museums or indoor sports grounds, and a negative coronavirus test is no longer enough.

The Austrian lockdown will not be the only one. Other EU states are approaching the closure

In Slovakia, the government has decided that people without vaccination or proof of covid-19 will not be able to visit, for example, shopping malls or certain types of stores.

In Belgium, the obligation to wear a veil in public and the partial obligation to work from home are beginning to apply.
